Why a Ford Bronco rental in LA can be so much fun!

by Damian Hagger

The Ford Bronco began to pave the way for modern SUVs when it first took the road in 1966.

Ever since, drivers have fallen in love with its exceptional driving dynamics and tail friendly nature. Since its release, there have been over five generations of the Ford Bronco. Each generation is more efficient and visually appealing than the last. Today the Bronco is complete with four wheel drive and removable roof panels.

The Offroading Vehicle

The Ford Bronco is equipped with four wheel drive, also known as 4×4 capabilities. In fact, the car actually has two 4×4 systems: standard and advanced. This is part of the 4×4 part time selectable engagement. The Ford Website explains this systems in depth.

If equipped, the Ford Bronco 4×4 with part-time selectable engagement system uses a 2-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) transfer case. This system offers:

● 2WD High
● 4WD High
● 4WD Low

Note: Vehicle can only shift to 4WD Low under specific conditions.

When either 4WD High or 4WD Low is selected, the system provides mechanically locked (50/50 split) four-wheel-drive power to both the front and rear axles for use in off-road or slippery conditions, such as deep snow, sand or mud. When 4WD Low is selected, the system provides additional gearing for increased torque multiplication in conditions such as deep sand, steep grades or pulling heavy objects. Additionally, the system is capable of recreational flat towing by putting the transfer case into the Neutral (N) position.

Ford calls these incredible offroading capabilities G.O.A.T. This stands for Goes Over Any Terrain; a phrase that pretty much explains itself. The Ford Bronco is built to traverse any terrain in any condition, and do it in style. Ford explains the history of this phrase on its website, G.O.A.T. was the original internal code name for the ’66 Bronco project at Ford. The new Bronco lives up to this original idea as the archetype of an agile, sports-oriented offroad 4×4 – with all the capability and durability it takes to endure Bronco Built WildTM Extreme Testing measures.

Ford also highlights it’s cars unique off roading and efficient driving capabilities, The new Bronco family honors its off-road legacy with race-tested EcoBoost® turbocharged engines, cutting-edge suspension hardware for suspension travel, all-terrain tires, and exclusive adventure-ready tech to help you take on the wild.

If Ford themself can’t convince you of how legendary the Broncos offroad features are, lend an ear to some unbiased opinions. David Tracy writes in his article Best Reviews 2021: The 2021 Ford Bronco Is The Compromised Off-Road Beast You Dreamed It Would Be.

The Ford Bronco is essentially a Jeep Wrangler built on the Ford Ranger platform. That’s obviously an oversimplification, but the reality is that the Bronco unabashedly borrows heavily from the Wrangler’s tool kit: The roof and doors come off, there’s tons of ground clearance, the overhangs are tiny, tires on higher-level trims are big and aggressive, gearing (in the transmissions, low-range-equipped transfer cases, and differentials) is short to ensure sufficient torque at the wheels to keep the vehicle moving even up steep grades, and there are a bunch of optional off-road features like lockers and a sway bar disconnect.

Ford builds the Bronco alongside the Ranger — which shares a similar architecture — at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan. Both Fords have bodies that are bolted to ladder frames, offer a solid rear axle and independent front suspension, and come with a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four (making 270 horsepower in the Ranger, 300 in the Bronco) mated to a 10-speed automatic. The Bronco adds an optional 330 horsepower 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 and a seven-speed Getrag manual transmission.

One of the Broncos biggest selling points over its Wrangler competitor is that independent front suspension, which allows for a modern electric rack-and-pinion steering system. This suspension setup should, in theory, give the Bronco significantly better on-road ride and handling at the expense of wheel articulation. I found that to be only partly the case.”

The Look

When it comes to judging the classic, yet modern look of the Ford Bronco, Connor Golden does it best in the article A List of Reasons to Love the Amazing 2021 Ford Bronco.

“Right off the bat, one of the 2021 Ford Bronco’s best features is its appearance. Aesthetically, Ford got this so, so right. Now, I’ve only seen it in Badlands configuration, but I reckon the two-door 2021 Ford Bronco is as proportionally perfect as a new off-road SUV can be in 2020.

I struggled to put my finger precisely on what this ultra-modern, ultra-retro design-language channeled, but I settled on a few disparate analogies. For one, it very much appears lifted straight from the halls of Ford’s design studio with little thought given to full-scale production. If you cold-previewed this vehicle to a room full of journalists, not a soul would have believed this production-ready Bronco was destined for anything other than a display of forgotten concepts at the Henry Ford Museum. In the same vein, it looks like the genius craftsmen and women at the Ringbrothers workshop reskinned a new Ford Explorer.

In this cynical world of shapeless SUVs and bulbous trucks, the 2021 Ford Bronco doesn’t look real. It’s a glimpse from an alternate timeline when the 1966 Bronco was never truly redesigned, but instead simply updated and modernized, and this is just the latest iteration of that machine. Honestly, alongside the revitalized Mercedes-Benz G-wagen, the 2021 Ford Bronco is proof the new Land Rover Defender could have been even better.”

Other Features

If we look beyond the shiny surface of the Bronco, we can see the impeccable detail Ford put into this car. Connor Golden goes in depth about attention to detail in the same article:

Begin to read the specs, climb around the truck, and explore the details—you find even more of the 2021 Ford Bronco’s best features. Talking to the engineers, I began to get the sense the 2021 Ford Bronco is an amalgam of careful engineering and thousands of hours of customer feedback and focus groups. As corny as it may be, Ford couldn’t have done this without the diehard Bronco fans—and Jeep fans, too. Engineers and product planners canvassed thousands of 4×4 enthusiasts, and identified common problems and complaints that generally aren’t really even considered problematic anymore—they’ve simply been accepted byproducts of the off-roader hobby.

The new Bronco’s doors are fully removable—while the mirrors remain fixed on the body, mind you—and are lighter than you might expect. Get the four-door, and you can safely stow the doors in the back—no more chaining doors to trees found alongside the trail. That innovative halo-style roof frame gives passengers a full, unobstructed view above, and don’t sweat those rainclouds—or the mud puddles—since many of the critical controls are waterproofed, the floors rubberized, and the upholstery cut from the same marine-grade vinyl found on watercraft.

Sure, the Jeep Wrangler has similar levels of waterproofing, but it shows Ford didn’t half-ass a thing here. The company had a list of best Bronco features to include on the production model, and it checked it thrice.”

Perfect for A LA Tour

Connor Golden also concludes his article by listing some of the best feature of the Ford Bronco:

  • Exterior styling to die for
  • Excellent off-road-driving hardware
  • Removable doors
  • Removable body panels
  • Innovative halo-style roof
  • Easy to clean
  • Waterproof controls
  • Available manual transmission
  • Subtle throwback branding
  • Lots of available accessories

All of the reasons above are why the Ford Bronco is the perfect rental for LA.

“There are so many different adventures to embark on in Los Angeles and the Ford Bronco can take you to them all. Martha G. describes her fun packed day in Los Angeles in her article Surfing and Skiing in LA.

When people think of Los Angeles the sunny beaches of Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu often comes to mind. Not typically associated with the City Of Angeles are snow capped mountains and skiing. But during the winter (or what Angelenos refer to as winter which is basically anything below 70 degrees Fahrenheit) one can visit places like the Getty Center, Greystone Mansion or Griffith Observatory with their sweeping, panoramic views of LA and, if it’s clear, look west to the crystal blues seas of the Santa Monica Bay where the Pacific Ocean meets the Los Angeles Basin, and then turn to the east to see the snow covered peaks of the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto Mountains.

I have often told guests on an LA Highlights Tour that this unique landscape that the city of LA is nestled into provides the opportunity to surf and ski in the same day. I’m not sure if they all believed me but it doesn’t matter. I know it’s possible because I recently was able to do it. The Ford Bronco would be the perfect companion on this thrilling day in sand and snow. After reviewing its classic aesthetics and mindblowing 4×4 capabilities, you can’t deny that the Ford Bronco is the perfect car for a fun day in LA!”
